Application Status of Geogrid in Expressway Construction

Although geogrids have good performance characteristics and are widely used in highway construction, the author finds that only by mastering the correct construction methods can they play their due role. For example, some construction personnel have incorrect understanding of the performance of laying geogrids and are unfamiliar with the construction process. There are still some shortcomings in the construction process during the specific construction, and the specific performance can be divided into the following aspects

(1) Incorrect laying method

Incorrect laying methods are also a disadvantage in the construction process of geogrids. For example, for the laying direction of geogrids, as the stress direction of geogrid materials is mainly unidirectional, it is necessary to ensure that the direction of geogrid ribs is consistent with the stress direction of longitudinal joints of the route during laying, in order to fully play the role of geogrids. However, some construction personnel do not pay attention to the laying method. During construction, they often place the geogrid in the opposite direction to the direction of the longitudinal joint stress, or the geogrid center deviates from the center of the subgrade longitudinal joint, resulting in uneven stress on both sides of the geogrid. As a result, not only does the geogrid not play its due role, but also causes waste of labor, materials, and machinery costs.

2Lack of construction technology

Due to the fact that most highway construction personnel have not received professional highway construction education, they also lack a good grasp of the construction technology of new materials, such as the overlapping construction of geogrids, which is not in place. This is mainly because the geogrid produced by the manufacturer is limited by its size, and its width generally varies from one meter to two meters, which requires it to have a certain overlap width when laying a wider subgrade. However, due to insufficient construction technology mastered by construction personnel, this point is often ignored in operation. Excessive overlapping can be wasteful, and insufficient or no overlapping can easily lead to weak points that separate the two, reducing the performance and effectiveness of geogrids. Another example is that in filling and leveling, the geogrid ignores the use of scientific construction procedures, resulting in damage to the geogrid, or inadequate treatment during subgrade filling, or even damage to the geogrid during rework. Although the requirements for construction technology of geogrids are not high, these shortcomings in technology have to some extent affected the engineering quality of the entire highway.

3Insufficient understanding of construction personnel

The design requirements for the laying of geogrid materials on expressways are relatively strict, but some construction personnel have insufficient knowledge of the performance and construction process of geogrids. In order to save time, labor, and materials, they often do not follow the original design for construction, and arbitrarily modify or cancel the use of geogrids, thereby reducing the construction quality of XX Expressway, which cannot be effectively guaranteed. For example, in order to catch up with the construction period, the geogrid is not firmly laid, or the laying time before filling materials is long, and there are many external factors that may affect the performance and effectiveness of the geogrid, such as wind, pedestrians, and vehicles. Not only can the construction quality be guaranteed, but if the geogrid is re laid, it will also waste time and affect the progress of the construction period.
